Trip Reports - Leeuwenkloof, August 2020

Our recent outing to Leeuwenkloof started out with us meeting up at the venue and being greeted by Willem (the owner) of Leeuwenkloof. We coffee and chatted before the drivers' briefing.

After the briefing we were all ready to go when our chairman (who was waiting down by the road) and had been lost with a few others, joined us for our drive. We started our drive with Karen, myself and Willem (our tracker / host) taking the lead of our 14-vehicle convoy along the trail which started with bush and lots of trees and tight turns.

This trail went through only a few rocky sections until we reached the relatively smooth race course that Toyota use for testing their new Raptor with its fancy new suspension system. Willem told us just how fast this Raptor can go with a properly trained Toyota driver, very scary.

We went past a few points of interest, a mine tunnel that was dug by hand, which most of our group climbed through and exited further down the valley, the open cast mine and firing kiln used by Willem’s family that had worked this land many years ago in removing lead and calcite from the rock used in different applications. This made such a pleasant change from just trail driving. Stopping to look at our surrounding and the work that has been done was truly appreciated, their dam under construction is pictured below.

Then the part we all looked forward to was the after braai with a few sparkles round the fire as we had booked their camp boma which gave us a lovely place to chill and chat.

We actually saw cave paintings made on the rock wall and we could only guess as to how old they were. At one stage there had been dassies living in the rock cavities as well as many other wild animals along the trial drive. It was a very nice drive and a great day out with friends.

Thanks so much to Willem for taking the time to show us around. We will certainly be back.

Best Regards,

Dave McMurdie
