Chairman's Letter

23 January 2020

Although we are more than halfway through January and we are well on our way into the New Year and the holidays are fast fading into a distant memory, I will kick things off by wishing you all the very best for 2020.

If we listen to all the naysayers, doom and gloom is all we hear and read about for the future in this beautiful country of ours. However, this is not the case as far as our Club is concerned as it looks like we are in for a bumper year!

This year’s first Open Day was held on Sunday 8th January and despite not having a speaker, was well attended. So well in fact, The Breakfast Brigade ran out of food, so apologies to those who missed out on the delicious breakfast. Congratulations to Anne Denholm who won the raffle. The numbers that are staying after the morning’s formalities and opting to braai is steadily climbing.

The first Day Outing to De Wildt is this coming Saturday. We have booked a Lapa to sit under while we braai and kuier. Dave McMurdie will lead this trip. Members, please support these events that we have put together.

Judging by the rate at which Extended Outing’s are filled up, it would appear that extended outings what most club members want. The first one to Baviaanskloof in February was filled up within the first week of the promo going out. Upon hearing that quite a large number of members were disappointed at not being able to secure a place on this trip, one of our club members has offered to lead a second trip in March/April 2020 if he can organise bookings. The second Extended Outing to do the Namakwa Trail in the Northern Cape in March is also full.

This brings me to another very important point. When doing EFT’s to The Club, PLEASE PUT YOUR NAME and REASON for payment on the proof of payment (especially when requesting the bank to send proof directly to us) e.g. P Hutchison (or membership number) Namakwa. We often receive payments with no name or anything else to identify what the payment is for. It is also just as important to fill out the booking form and send it to the requested email address on the booking form.

We’ve just had a member pay R 1 500.0 to the club, but not state for what purpose. This member also did not complete and send in the Outing Booking Form. The Secretary assumed (same amount) that it was for club fees. Consequently, this member, although one of the first to pay the required trip deposit, has not been included on the trip, much to that member’s disappointment.

I mentioned in my last letter that Base 4 was once again looking alive after a very severe and dry winter. However, after the holidays and the abundance of rain Base4 is over grown! There is much work that needs to be done and we will be organizing Saturday work parties shortly to help! In the interim if there are any volunteers to help, please contact Karl.

The general WhatsApp Group for those that opted to remain on has a lot of banter and general WhatsApp traffic which is typical of this type of social media inter-action. The 2nd WhatsApp Group on which only Noel will be able to post messages will be operational shortly and you are all urged to remain on it lest you miss out on some important announcement.

As the AGM is just around the corner, I would like to end off with a few important points. The 2019 Committee has been very successful in turning The Club around. Membership is up, the financial position has stabilized and we have a full year of activities coming up. I would like to thank my fellow Committee Members for their hard work and dedication. The question arises, what more can we as members do? The answer is simple - a lot more! I urge all members to become involved in the Club. It does not matter how small your involvement is, from being just supportive and attending Open Day and events to being a very involved committee member. Like ants, on our own we are doomed, but together we can survive and thrive.
