Chairman's Letter

11 November 2019

I’m finding writing this letter a little difficult after yesterday’s celebration of the Springboks' fantastic Rugby World Cup victory. Congratulations to the “Bokke”! The Springboks peaked at the right moment, and I think we need to say a big thanks to the All Blacks for wearing the English out in the first semi-finals, when they obviously peaked. All in all, I thought it was a great game, very tense for the first 60 minutes after which the Bok pressure was just too much. All credit to the Japanese for a really entertaining tournament. Our English members will have to wait another four years for another go. As a consolation, I think Hamilton will be crowned Formula 1 World Champion for the umpteenth time tonight.

Now onto FWDCSA matters. Open Day was an interesting affair as we had a very divisive speaker, who upset quiet a few of those present, with a number walking out. On the other hand, some agreed with his extreme right-wing views, for the life of me I’m not sure what his agenda is. The important thing here is to remember tolerance and respect. Things calmed down and a wonderful afternoon was had by those who stayed and braaied under the trees afterwards.

The outing to Lydenburg went off extremely well, so I am told, with some of our members from Hoedspruit joining in. I unfortunately had another arrangement so did not go, and so will have to wait for Geoff and Leslie’s report when they finally find time to write it.

Geoff and some of us on the committee have been extremely busy organizing next weeks’ Jamboree. I must say this has been extremely hard work organizing (we may have left it a bit late) and I sincerely hope that all Club members show their appreciation and come and support this main Club event of the year. So far, we only have 14 paid entrants, with another 6 that have indicated that they will enter. Of the 14, I think only 12 are actually club members, not great out of a total membership of 132! We are hopeful that we should manage to get between 25 to 30 entrants. So those members who are able to, PLEASE ENTER! We are also appealing to members to just come along and either help out or just support those who have entered and have some fun.

Please note a number of us will be at BASE4 from Friday morning through to Sunday afternoon. So, if you are unable to be at the Jamboree (Saturday morning) pop in at any other time and join in. There is a spit braai after the prize giving.

Open Day will be a low-key event as our speaker, Rob Bowden, who was to speak about the leopards of the Magaliesberg, has postponed until the New Year.

Another new development, which has also caused some controversy, is Noel’s WhatsApp Group. The committee thought this was a great idea to get the members to communicate with each other. However, a lot of members have been irritated by what has been posted and feeling it is irrelevant have left the group. Personally, I think any means of getting members to interact and build up some spirit is a good thing. Consequently, it has been decided to keep the present FWDCSA chat group as is, that is for those members who are still on this group and enjoy the chit chat, to carry on. We do request that you leave religion, politics and anything of a sexual nature out, also please watch your language.

Noel will start a new WhatsApp Group where only he can post things on it. This will be solely for The Committee to make announcements concerning FWDCSA matters. He will again add all current paid up members, and you are requested to remain on it if you wish to be informed of what is going on in the club.

Lastly, if you are receiving this letter and are not currently a paid-up member, then that means you were recently a member but you are not up to date with your membership fees. The committee has taken the decision to write off all old subs of those members who have not paid and wish to retain their membership. To be eligible for this concession, you need to pay your 2020 membership fee (R1 500) by the end of November. Please contact Karl, Stan or myself if you wish to take up this offer.

Regards,
Peter
